we use FMP 6 and unlimited to web publish within our firewall (so unfortunately you can't see anything unless you're physically on my campus). I'm joining this list to see if there's any shared wisdom to be had.

Intranet vsa Internet

OK, this is my Dumb Question #1:

What is the substantial difference between the two? Please go beyond my basic, non-technical description, correct it and use plain English that ordinary mortals can understand.

(Limit or explain/link to acronyms and technical terms).

So here is my limited comprehension:

Internet is the word wide web and other protocols that deliver pages to the outside world.

Intranet is a system that limits the network to a company, a limited set of users. What protocol does it use? TCP/IP? Could a typical office network from 1986, before companies got into the web be referred to as an Intranet?

Is Intranet a new term used to describe old networking setups (IPX/SPX - and I dont even know what that was precisely), or did it come to existence with the proliferation of TCP/IP?

And, finally can Intranet be used effectively (is is fast enough or same as using 10-15 copies of FM?) to share an FM file in a small office, instead of having to license purchase a copy for everyone?

Well, if you understand networking in depth please give us some background and history on this - you'll be very popular...

So lets ask them!

Again, I did not have a chance to implement this. Can an ENTIRE FM 7 database be published on the Web using instant Web publishing? I mean without having use Lasso, FM server or plug in-s.

Can this be effectively used instead of licensing let's say 10 users?

I almost got a contract for a big New York client who had Citrix server. How to network Filemaker cost effectively is always an issue since they killed the networking feature in Developer 3.

Hi all,

I am producing a web-based market-facing CRM app using FMP6.
+ Deployed on IIS5 - pages are HTML/CDML
+ FMP Unlimited 6
+ Over two dozen files involved
+ SSL implementation
+ HIPAA Compliant

I am glad to contribute to this tribe by fielding questions in these areas.

Any info on encrypting FMP databases i.e. NAS/SAN strategies from the tribe would be apprecitated. Also, I can't figure out how to hash the URL so that the viewer can't see the contents during their session.

Recursive Function

Ok - don't know if iit' recursive, but it's the word i'm using

As an exercise, i'm tracking the team and player stats for my favorite NBA team. What i want is a field defintion that tracks certain stats "fro the season" after each game. So i don't want it to dynamically change after every ggame.

I want to know the teams FG% after game six (which includes games 1-6) and then after game seven (which includes games 1-7), and i want to be able to look at them in comparison, maybe for graphing later on.

Anyone have any idea how to do what i'm talking about?

FM networking questions

Hi, I figured if a tribe could help me with some questions I have, it would be you guys....

1) can filemaker files go cross-platform?

2) if 2 people in different locations need to be able use the same FM database (not necessarily at the same time) what would be good ways of doing this...other than e-mailing the files back and forth which we don't want to do? One person said they have a server but I'm not sure what kind though. But I do know he does have a company website.

I know this isn't a lot of info to go on, but any advice would be most appreaciated.

thanks.
