FM networking questions

topic posted Wed, November 5, 2003 - 5:30 PM by  shari
Hi, I figured if a tribe could help me with some questions I have, it would be you guys....

1) can filemaker files go cross-platform?

2) if 2 people in different locations need to be able use the same FM database (not necessarily at the same time) what would be good ways of doing this...other than e-mailing the files back and forth which we don't want to do? One person said they have a server but I'm not sure what kind though. But I do know he does have a company website.

I know this isn't a lot of info to go on, but any advice would be most appreaciated.

thanks.

    Shari,

    1. Filemaker Pro data base files are cross-platform. No conversion. Any Filemaker Pro database can be opened by Filemaker Pro Windows, Filemaker Pro Mac OS, and Filemaker Pro Mac OS X.

    2. You don't need a server. Network sharing of data bases is built-in to every copy of Filemaker Pro. You just need to enable Sharing in Filemaker: that would make your databases available to other Filemaker Pro users over a network (including a standard Internet connection).

Or you can turn on Web Sharing and publish it as a secure web page, so that another user doesn't even need a copy of Filemaker in order to browse and edit data -- only a web browser.

Are you using Filemaker Pro now?

      thanks for the info Austin.

I've used FM pretty substantially in the past (I'm unemployed at the moment). I may however be helping someone out with updating their FM database, but we live over an hour apart so I am trying to find ways to be able to help him from home.

Seems the web based option may be the best. Is it easy to set up? tell me more!

      thanks again.

    * It may be impractical to email an entire Filemaker Pro database file. It is big, because it contains other information besides data, such as structure, and indices.

However, it may be feasible to email just the data. Export the data as a "Tab-delimited" (TXT) file or as a "Data Interchange Format" (DIF) file. Such a file can be less than half the size of the database file.

Further space savings could be obtained by exchanging only the records which have been changed; but that may require extra care to set up.
